In the village of Oakvale-On-Roe – (029) Playing to Win

Detective Constable Krisztina Verebes was one of the latest recruits to the squad and in DI Cutler’s, opinion had quickly made herself one of the most valuable. At twenty-eight years old she had only been on the team six months and had already broken every heart, male and female, in the building.

A stunningly attractive slim brunette it amazed almost everyone how she was still single, but she was a single woman, which everyone put down to her ambition to succeed when in fact she was just fussy.

She had never disclosed it to anyone, because she jealously guarded her private life, but had decided at an early age what she was looking for in a partner, but she was yet to find them, the result on the onlooker was to give her an air of the mysterious.

Her role in Steve Cutlers squad was as the squad’s computer expert even though she couldn’t have looked less like a computer nerd if she tried.

Krisztina liked Oliver, he made her laugh and feel sexy all at the same time, and he was kind and thoughtful.

He was tall and muscular and was good looking man with auburn hair and intense eyes, and he ticked a lot of boxes for her.

She was stunningly attractive slim brunette, so she was more than a match for him, they were both still single, both professionals, but she was fussy, and she wasn’t sure if someone like him had her in his plans for the future.

However, she didn’t think of him as just a man and she hadn’t felt that way about a man since she was at Police College.

However, that had all ended very badly indeed and left her totally devastated and she did not want to repeat that mistake and feel worthless again.

She thought about nipping it in the bud and not taking a chance with him, but then she thought, “why should she?” why wouldn’t it succeed?

Aoife certainly thought she should give it a chance, and she knew him, she said he was a really good person and was sure there could be a bright future for her and Oliver.

The only fly in the ointment as far as she was concerned was that she wasn’t really sure how he felt about her, Aoife hadn’t been any help in that regard, he hadn’t even tried to kiss her, apart from a peck on the cheek when they parted at the hospital.

She asked herself if she had wanted him too, and the answer was yes, so she concluded that perhaps it was time for her to take the initiative.

The Golf event was on the Sunday of the Halloween weekend and it was an annual event at the Tipton Park Golf Club and she and her usual golfing partner DC Greg Owens, who was a very good golfer even though his unathletic posture and gait would indicate otherwise, neither of them had played Tipton before as it was an exclusive club so they were both looking forward to it.

It was a beautiful crisp Autumnal day, no wind and not a cloud in the sky, and she and Greg were standing by his car when Oliver pulled up.

“Good morning” he said and shook Greg’s hand and kissed her cheek.

“Well, that’s encouraging” she thought “but just on the cheek again”

But aloud she just repeated his greeting as the passenger door opened and a willowy redhead got out.

“This is Arabella, my baby sister” Oli said

“Call me Bella” she said and shook their hands, and Greg was immediately smitten.

All the way to the club house Oli was giving her Golf tips, her grip, her stance, her swing.

“I wish you’d just shut up and kiss me” she screamed in her head

“The most important thing is to relax, don’t tense up” he said

“No, the most important thing is that you take me in your arms and kiss me” she replied silently

Even if she’d said it out loud there wouldn’t have been time to act on it as they were soon at their destination.

Oli and Krisztina were the last to tee off in a four ball.

“Don’t worry if you’re only a novice” he said as they approached the 1st tee “I can help you as we go around”

“Ok” she said

Kriszsie was the first to tee off, it was a short dog leg par four, just under 200 yards to the turn so she selected her 3 wood and took up her position.

“That might be a little ambitious” Bella said

“Remember to relax those shoulders” Oli said encouragingly, agreeing with his sister about her club selection

Krisztina took a couple of practice swings and then addressed the ball before hitting a crisp clean drive which sailed straight down the middle of the fairway.

“Whoa” Bella said “I thought you were a novice”

“I never said that” Krisztina retorted

“You did say you played “a little”” Oliver said

“I have only played “a little” this year because it’s been so busy at work” she said

“You’re a bandit” Oli said and laughed

By the end of the 17th Greg and Oli were 4 shots off the pace and Krisztina and Bella were all square.

After 3 shots Bella was on the green with a 20ft putt remaining and Krisztina was on the apron more than a hundred feet from the pin.

Bella was supremely confident as she watched Krisztina chip to within 12 feet of the hole.

Arabella however 3 putted and Krisztina holed her putt to win.

Oliver was delighted, partly because it gave him ammunition to rib Bella but mainly because he really liked Krisztina.

When all the scores were in Krisztina was the highest placed woman and she won the nearest the pin on the par 3 7th.

There was a great huddle of bodies at the bar, but she was stood in a quiet corner of the lounge admiring her little trophy when Oli joined her.

“So, I wasn’t able to teach you anything today after all” he said

“I was trying to impress you, and you ended up impressing me”

“That was my intention” she said

“To impress me?” he asked

“To get you to notice me” she replied and he looked puzzled

“You wanted me to notice you?”

“You have a lot to learn about women” she said taking a step towards him.
“Maybe you can teach me then” he told her looking into her eyes.
“There’s no maybe about it” She said and leaned her face towards him and touched her full lips gently to his.

He responded in kind and they were both lost in the magic of the moment.

As their lips parted they both opened their eyes.
“Would you like me to teach you some more?” she asked smiling.
“That’s a silly question” he replied and wrapped his arms around her waist pulling her close and their lips met again, but this time there was no restraint.

Theirs was not the only romance that began at Tipton Park Golf Club on that Halloween weekend because Greg and Bella also ended the day kissing.
