The Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa – Pretty in Pink

The beautiful Downshire village of Clerembeax St Giles was situated to the west of Abbeyvale located between Grace Hill and Bushy Down and on the outskirts was the Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa.

It was once the home The Clerembeax’s, who arrived in Downshire following the Norman conquests and stayed for a thousand years before the name died out following the death of the reclusive Marcus Clerembeax at the age of 96.

The current owner was Yvonne Labuschagne, who decided to open it as a Hotel and Spa.

The Spa was a good attraction, but it was crucial for them to maintain a high occupancy rate, however things were tough in the Hotel trade with the success of Travelodge, Premier Inn and Holiday Inn Express and so places like the Palace needed to offer something extra to attract the guests, apart from the Spa.

So they put on novelty weekends, such as “Murder Mysteries” and in addition, they had a sizable Ballroom which was used for special occasions, high days and holidays, which boosted occupancy and Spa numbers at the same time, and among the employees were Evelyn Cooper, Jane Dooney and Ken Cake and from very early on after they met it had seemed to the casual observer that they were to be an eternal triangle for the whole summer and one of the girls would have landed Ken by autumn, but she knew that Jane did, which was why she took every opportunity to do something without the other two, so they might finally realise they were a couple.

Not that the three of them didn’t enjoy passing some of their spare time together, but Jane looked forward to the times when she could get Ken all to herself.

Fortunately, Jane and Ken were late risers and as Evelyn was always up with the lark she was often out the door on her days off well before the other two surfaced.

But although she liked Ken and got to spend a lot of time with him she wasn’t sure enough of herself to make her feelings known, and as he was painfully shy he wasn’t going to make the first move, so they were at an impasse, and it would take some surprising news to begin to break it.

Sometimes Evelyn would set off on foot through the wood or go up to the stable and exercise one of the horses up at Stevens Farm while on other days she would get in the car and explore the countryside, but on one occasion she was invited to her sister Claire’s house one Friday night in June, for her husband Jacks birthday.

There was no particular surprise in that, but what shocked all her friends and colleagues was that when she left her sister’s house she was engaged to Dean Kerley.

Jane was shocked at the revelation, not because Evelyn wasn’t a catch, she very much was, and in fact she was lovely.

But what left Jane gobsmacked was the fact that when she left the village on Friday afternoon she was not only single but didn’t even have a boyfriend.

“How did she manage that?” Jane asked herself and the answer was that Evelyn was much more outgoing than Jane and that combined with an excess of alcohol brought the engagement about.

But not only was Jane reserved she was also teetotal so shedding her inhibitions in an alcohol haze was not an option.

The wedding date was set for the following year at St Giles’ Church in Clerembeax, and in their little triangle the talk was of little else with Jane to be a bridesmaid and Ken an usher, but despite the additional time together Jane and Ken still couldn’t get beyond just being friends.

A week before the wedding was the obligatory hen night, organised by Evelyn’s sister Claire, which consisted of all the girls from the Hotel, who could get the night off, her friends from the village, plus Yvonne Labuschagne and Hannah Morgan.

It was held at the Clerembeax Spa Hotel and was a weekend centred more on pampering and preening than drinking and was followed by a lavish meal in the Hotel Restaurant.

Evelyn made sure that Jane and Ken were sat together in the hope that they might finally break the ice, but nothing happened.

The wedding, the following Saturday, was a fairy tale affair at St Giles’ Church and every woman present was jealous to the core and such was Evelyn popularity in the village the Church was full to the gunwales.

St Giles’ was a pretty little Church and was made even more so by the addition of flowers and dressings of appropriate finery.

The wedding party were conveyed to and from the Church on a Governess Cart, a small two-wheeled horse-drawn cart with a small tub body decorated with flowers, pulled by a set white horses and led by Rose and Muriel from the stables at Stevens Farm.

Jane arrived at the church with the other Bridesmaids shortly before the Bride, in the pale pink dresses and stood by the Lych-gate where Ken was performing his duties as Usher.

When Evelyn appeared on the arm of her Father there was an audible gasp.

“She’s absolutely stunning” Jane said, “Have you ever seen anyone more beautiful?”

“Yes, every time I look at you” Ken said, and she gasped, then he panicked when he realised what he’d said, but then she smiled and took hold of his hand.

After a very moving ceremony through which Jane cried most of the way, the reception was held at the Clerembeax Spa Hotel and Jane and Ken were once again seated beside each other, but this time they did break the ice and held hands all through the proceedings stopping only when it was time to eat and resumed again at the earliest opportunity.

Their first kiss came later on the south terrace in the moonlight and despite the fact it had been keenly anticipated it was measured and unhurried and was lingeringly long.

It was a kiss they would repeat countless time, though in that location only once more, which was twelve months later at their own wedding.

The Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa – Reprieved

The beautiful Downshire village of Clerembeax St Giles was situated to the west of Abbeyvale located between Grace Hill and Bushy Down and on the outskirts was the Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa and it was the location of The Funeral Directors of Downshire Awards and William Hemmings and Sons of Abbottsford were represented by Sister and Brother, Melanie and Will Hemmings, Alexandra Norris and Elise Szczypek.

Melanie and Alexandra were an item and all the time they had been together, in fact ever since the latter set her cap at Mel when she first joined the firm, Alex had Mel heart and soul exclusively, but not so her body.

Melanie liked to play the field, and she played it well, but Alex was true and faithful, but she was growing tired of waiting for Mel to grow up, so while they were at the Hotel she Gave Mel an ultimatum as they lay in bed.

“We’ve been together for a year now and I’ve tried to not care about you seeing other women, but I really do care” Alex said

“And I know you are so don’t bother trying to deny it”

Mel began to speak but she stopped her

“I don’t know who, though I have my suspicions”, she said flatly

“And I don’t think I want to know but I know you’re sleeping with other women”

Again, Mel began to speak but again Alex stopped her

“And there will come a time in the not too distant future when I walk away from us, I love you and I’m certain sure of that, and I know you say you love me but I’m not so sure of that”

“But I do love you” Mel said taking her hand

“But you don’t love me as completely as I love you” Alex retorted taking her hand away “you are enough for me, but clearly I’m not enough for you”

Mel tried to speak once more but again she was stopped.

“So, you have three months to sow your wild oats or to curb your appetites or whatever it is you do” she continued

“But at that point I need to feel your commitment, and you need to want me and me alone, and that’s all I have to say”

Melanie was cleared to speak at that point but didn’t know what to say she wanted to say don’t be silly you’re the only one for me, but she knew she was right on the money, she knew she was getting plenty, and she was liking that, but if she wanted to keep the girl she loved it was obvious she would have to change.

Melanie was shocked, firstly because it never occurred to her for a moment that she couldn’t have her cake and eat it, and secondly although Mel knew she loved Alex more than she had ever loved anyone she didn’t realise quite how much that was until that moment when she realised she could lose her.

The prospect of losing her stunned her and she knew she had to make changes in her life.

“Don’t look so glum” Alex said kissing Mel’s lips “I’m not giving up on you yet”

In the weeks that followed their relationship went on unchanged, they made love as often and with the same intensity as they always had but Mel felt uneasy during the periods in the afterglow when feelings and emotions were expressed, souls are bared, and hearts unburdened.

These were not the times she looked forward to because there was the thorny question of Alex’s mistrust of her and what she would say, what she would ask and how many lies Mel would have to tell her.

Her biggest fear was however that each time they talked was another step towards the deadline, another day closer to that dreaded moment when it ended.

How much time would elapse before she finally lost patience with her and her philandering and found someone worthier of her love.

But the dreaded questions never came, all the talk was of the future, the distant future, the future beyond the end of the three months.

But then right out of the blue just as the deadline neared, with Mel just as permissive as always, Alex had to return to Manchester as her father was near death, so Mel drove her to Abbottsford Station and saw her onto the train.

After seeing Alex off at the station Mel had plenty of time to think about the time they spent together and more importantly the implications of her absence.

The fact that Alex wouldn’t be home for several weeks altered things tremendously because it meant no lies and no broken promises.

Since Alex had delivered her ultimatum, the threat of losing her love had been hanging over her head like the sword of Damocles.

Now she couldn’t believe it, she was off the hook; she no longer had to curb her appetites, as there was no apparent consequence to her actions.

So, could she relax? Did she have to change at all? And if she didn’t have to change, could she change.

Well the lack of apparent consequences resulted in her treating herself to some prolonged over indulgence.

But after having completed a series of spectacular one night stands she felt guiltier with the ultimatum suspended and not being under scrutiny, than she did when she was under threat.

Of course, Mel always felt guilty after such lustful interactions, and this occasion was no different, and she always swore to herself not to do it again, again this time was no different.

But at the time, she performs her philandering betrayals without a second thought for the woman she loved and love her she most certainly did.

But with every pleasure there is a pain, Mel just hadn’t felt it yet.

So, after mulling over everything for the umpteenth time she had decided that she would treat the temporary separation as an amnesty.

She could spend the next two weeks shagging everything with a pulse and she wouldn’t have to worry.

She wouldn’t be seeing Alex, so he wouldn’t have to lie to her, so she could do what she wanted to who she wanted, but she decided that she would not go looking for strumpets, she would not frequent pick up places, she would not hunt for wenches, but if some suitable choice titbits fell across her path who were in playful mood they would be considered fare game and sin free.

Mel made this decision knowing full well that the chance of her not disgracing herself with some filly or other in a two-week period were remote at best.

There were always opportunities of snagging some piece of available skirt, so she knew there were always plenty of chances to seduce or be seduced.

But she made it more challenging by not going out on the pull, but in the funeral business there were any number of grieving widows or tearful kin that came through the doors of William Hemmings and Sons of Abbottsford, so she picked her conquests from them, and she always thought there was something quite exquisite when she seduced a woman in her widow’s weeds.

TOUGH LOVE

If you fall in love

And get your fingers burnt

If you give all of yourself

And end up broken hearted

Don’t withdraw from life

Get back in the saddle

Dip your toe once more into the mire

Don’t deny yourself the chance

To swim again in an ocean of desire

You must be immersed

In an ocean of emotional tempest

To feel alive, to be alive

You must take off your vest

Before May is out

Take a risk, take a gamble

If you don’t buy a ticket

You can never win the jackpot

It’s better to open up to danger

Take the knocks and live

IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS

IN THE COMPANY OF ANGELS

If I am the first to go

I will wait for you in the place

Where the crowns of Angels glow

If I go first because I lost the fight

I will be waiting with the Father

Where the tunnel opens into light

If I am the first one there

I will await you in lush meadows

Where heady perfume fills the air

If I go first and leave you lonely

We will meet again in paradise

In our loved ones company

If I am the first to go, allay your fears

I will be waiting in the place

Where there are no more tears

If I go before you and we must part

I will wait for you in heaven

Where sweet music soothes the heart

If I am first to go we will meet again

In a far better place than this

Where God has banished pain

If I go first through the eternal door

You will find me with the angels

Where suffering is no more

If I am first to go by days or years

You will find me waiting there

Far beyond this vale of tears

The Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa – The Confidence to Act

The beautiful Downshire village of Clerembeax St Giles was situated to the west of Abbeyvale located between Grace Hill and Bushy Down and on the outskirts was the Clerembeax Palace Hotel and Spa which had become very important to the lives of those living in the village community with St Giles’ Church at its hub.

It was a busy village with all the usual amenities you would expect, in addition to St Giles’ Church there was a village Hall, and primary school of the same name.

There was also the Trinity Methodists Church, two pubs, Étienne of Normandy and the Saracen and Stephenson’s General store which included an off-license, newsagents and Post Office.

The General Store was run by Ilyas Patel, although it was his young wife Anjuli and her Aunt Shula who did all the work, along with a few additional staff.

One of the shops regular customers was Trevor Clark, who did the maintenance up at the hotel, and he didn’t like Ilyas, he was a surly old goat, old enough to be Anjuli’s father, in fact he was old enough to be Trevor’s father, at a push, who spent most of his time sat on his arse watching cricket.

He thought his wife and her Aunt were both lovely though, Anjuli was twenty years younger than him, but her Aunt Shula was the same age as him.

She too had been married to an older man, but he had died very soon after the marriage and as a young widow she was of considerably less worth than an unwed young woman, so her lot was to be a skivvy with no status in the household, not that Anjuli ever treated her that way.

They were both tall and slim with thick black hair with big almost black eyes and huge toothy smiles, which lit up the whole shop, if not the village.

Whenever he was in the shop he always flirted dreadfully with her and her niece and the latter would always flirt back, but Shula was too shy, she would just smile and blush.

On the days she was at the till and it came time to pay there was always a lingering exchange where their hands would almost touch but not quite, and occasionally he would caress her hand with his thumb or brush his fingertips against hers and she would blush and get very flustered, which he thought was very endearing.

But as much as he liked her, despite him not being as shy as her, he was not confident enough in himself to ask her out.

One day he did almost ask her out, it was mid-morning and he was on his way home.

The shop was almost deserted, he had seen lazy Ilyas and his lovely wife Anjuli driving away from the village, but the lovely Shula was in the shop, and a young woman called Shelley Prangnell was filling shelves.

When she saw him walk in she quickly fussed with her thick black hair and made herself look even lovelier.

“Morning Shula” he said, and she instantly got very flustered

“Oh, oh, good morning Trevor” she said and moved awkwardly to the counter

“I saw Anjuli driving off with Ilyas” he said

“Yes, he has a hospital appointment” she replied

Trevor only needed a newspaper which he put on the counter.

“Here’s my chance” he said to himself “Ask her now while there’s no one around”

So, he took a deep breath and prepared to ask her as he brushed her hand as he was paying, but another customer entered the shop, and then another and another until there were five people in the shop, and his moment had gone so he gave Shula’s hand a final stroke

“Bye Shushu” he said and winked at her, turned and left.

He didn’t see much of her over the next few weeks partly because he had been working late into the evening as there was a lot going on at the hotel, and subsequently the shop was shut by the time he finished.

The other reason was because Ilyas was very ill and was in hospital so Anjuli and Shula had to take turns being with him at the hospital, and as luck would have it that was where Shula was every time he went into the shop.

But one night as he walked home he noticed the lights from Stephenson’s General Store spilling into the street and as he got close he was delighted to see the lovely Shula closing up and his heart soared.

“Hello Shushu” he called as he approached

“Oh Trevor” she said flustered, not quite knowing what to do or where to look.

“Where is everyone?” he asked, he knew Ilyas was in hospital even if he didn’t know why.

“Anjuli had to rush to the hospital, Ilyas had a bad turn” Shula said, “So I’m closing up on my own tonight”

“Let me help then” he offered

“Thank you, Trevor,” she said smiling coyly and between the two of them they soon made light work of it and when the last stack of plastic goods went in through the door he stood in the doorway and said

“Well that’s everything”

“Thank you, Trevor,” she said and beamed him a beautiful smile

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going” he said, and the smile left her face

“No, no” she said “come in, come in”

And she pulled him forcefully aside, so she could close the door

“You must have a hot drink” she insisted, “You must be very cold, come, come”

This was a side of her he had never seen before, and when the door was closed and the shutter was down, she led him through the shop,    behind the counter and through the bead curtain to the inner sanctum, which consisted of a desk and filing cabinet in once corner, a small kitchen at the far end, with a fridge, a sink and a counter with the drinks making paraphernalia, and a sitting area with chairs and a table, and he thought it a rather dull and dingy place to be perfectly honest though it was brightened considerably by the lovely Shula who was at the sink filling the kettle.

Trevor didn’t think she wanted a hot drink any more than he did, so he walked up behind her and put his hands round her waist and breathed in her perfume as he kissed her ear and neck

“Oh Trevor” she sighed

“I don’t really want a hot drink,” he said

“Ok” she said and put the kettle down before turning to face him

“Perhaps you would like a soft drink or a beer” she suggested but he ignored her and before she could speak again he kissed her and the moment his lips touched hers she locked onto his mouth like a limpet and her arms gripped him around the neck like a bear trap and the shyness was gone along with his need to ask her out, he very definitely had his answer.

THE SEEDS OF LOVE ARE SOWN

The seeds of love are sown

When cupid’s arrow flies

A love that grows ever stronger

Begins at first in the eyes

Then the seeds are nurtured

And with patient cultivation

Then love, strong and sturdy

Will be the fruitful culmination

AWOKEN

You have awoken the sleeping beast

That was my heart of black

You have awakened the feelings

That died in me a long time back

You have made my senses tingle

You have made my pulses race

You have filled me with a glow

And brought a smile back to my face

Now the sleeping beast has awoken

I just thought you should know

You have given me new life

And I will always love you so
